Official documentation shows how specific this gets. Wacom lists Windows, macOS, Android, and ChromeOS requirements for the Intuos line, along with driver-download prerequisites. Older tablets may only have drivers from a much earlier OS era — one community discussion describes a tablet whose only official drivers date to the Vista era and required workarounds to run on Windows 8.

Decision rule: if your OS build or port configuration is not explicitly listed, treat the tablet as unverified rather than compatible. A tablet that requires an adapter or dongle chain adds a failure point every time you sit down to work — verify that the exact connection mode you plan to use is documented as supported before you buy.

Check 2: Driver Availability, Installation, and Update Behavior

Community discussion is useful here as qualitative context for recurring friction and edge cases. But anecdote volume is not an incidence rate. A handful of complaints does not tell you how often a problem occurs across all users — it tells you the problem exists and is worth investigating.

Decision rule: if your workflow depends on staying current with OS and application versions, a current exact-model driver and a recovery path outweigh a small pen-spec advantage.

Skip the premium tier when your application and OS are already confirmed working on a lower-cost model and pen-feel differences are not your bottleneck. If you are doing annotation, basic illustration, or occasional retouching, the base model may clear every check.

Skip pen displays when your constraint is desk space, portability, or budget rather than direct-on-screen drawing. A screenless tablet with a good driver can serve you better than a pen display with a mediocre one.

Pay more when driver support longevity, per-app profile quality, or display mapping reliability removes a recurring frustration you will hit weekly. Premium tablets buy integration quality and support horizon, not necessarily better pen hardware on paper.

The tradeoff each recommendation accepts: you are paying for the software layer and the support window, not for a spec-sheet advantage. A tablet with 8,192 pressure levels and a current driver beats a tablet with 16,384 pressure levels and a driver that has not been updated in three years.
