Stop there for a moment. Most first lighting problems are placement and room problems, not gear problems. This checklist walks through five checks in order, each with a pass state you can see on your own camera preview. Run them before you spend anything.
Run the checklist in this order
Order matters. Fix the room and where you sit before you add or replace lights, because a new light cannot outvote a bright window behind your head.
The five checks:
- Background brightness — is anything bright behind you?
- Light direction — where is your main light coming from?
- Glare — are your glasses or screen reflecting the light?
- Color consistency — is your color the same across sources?
- Light size and diffusion — is your light big enough for your face?
Each check has a pass state you can judge on the camera preview, not a spec number. If a check passes, skip it. Do not buy gear to solve a problem you do not have.
Check 1: Is anything bright behind you?
This is the most common beginner failure, and it is rarely a gear problem.
The mechanism: many cameras meter for the brightest area in the frame. If a window, lamp, or bright wall sits behind you, the camera may dim the whole image to protect that highlight — and your face goes dark or turns into a silhouette. How strongly this happens depends on your camera's metering mode, dynamic range, and settings, so treat it as a likely cause rather than a fixed rule.
Official meeting-space guidance is direct about this: avoid strong light sources behind the participant, and be careful with exterior windows and harsh sunlight contrast.
Fix order, before buying anything:
- Move the camera or your chair so the bright area is no longer behind you.
- Close the curtain, or diffuse it with a sheer layer.
- Reduce the background light — turn off the lamp behind you.
Pass state: your face and the background look roughly similar in brightness on the preview. Neither one is blown out.
Buying decision: if repositioning solved it, you do not need a new light for this problem. This is the check that saves the most money.
Check 2: Where is your main light coming from?
Your key light is the main light shaping your face — whether that is a window, a desk lamp, or a dedicated LED panel. You already have one; the question is whether its direction is helping.
Aim for roughly 30–45 degrees off to one side and slightly above eye level. Straight-on light flattens the face into a passport photo. Extreme side light splits it into a hard half-and-half.
Official troubleshooting guidance supports moving the light and adding fill rather than assuming you need a bigger fixture. Direction is free; wattage is not.
Pass state: one side of your face is slightly brighter, the shadow side is still readable, and there is a small catchlight — a tiny bright dot — in your eyes.
Tradeoff: a light placed close and off-axis is easier to control, but it takes desk or floor space and may sit in your eyeline while you work.
Check 3: Are your glasses or screen reflecting the light?
If you wear glasses, glare is easy to misdiagnose as a camera or lens problem. It is not.
The mechanism: a light source positioned so its reflection angle lines up with your glasses and the lens sends that reflection straight back into the camera. A source sitting near the camera axis is more likely to line up this way, which is why near-camera placement often makes glare worse — but the exact angle depends on your light position, source size, and the geometry of your glasses and lens.
Official guidance suggests moving the light off-center, lowering brightness, or softening the source.
Practical order:
- Raise or lower the light.
- Shift it further to the side.
- Reduce output.
- Add diffusion.
Pass state: you can see both eyes clearly, with no bright rectangle or hotspot on the lenses.
Tradeoff: moving the light off-axis reduces glare but increases side shadow, so you may need a small fill on the other side. That fill can be a cheap bounce off a white wall — it does not have to be a second fixture.
Check 4: Is your color consistent?
Color temperature is how warm or cool a light looks, measured in Kelvin. Daylight, ceiling bulbs, and LED settings all sit at different values. Mix them and skin tones drift while the camera guesses which one is "white."
Official meeting-space guidance points to a roughly 3000K–4500K diffused range as a reasonable starting point for indoor video calls. Treat that as a meeting-space reference, not a universal creator standard. Tunable lights exist — published specs list a 2900–7000K range on some desk LED panels — but a wide range is only useful if you pick one value and keep it.
Practical habit: set the light once, set the camera white balance to match, and stop changing it between recordings. Consistency beats precision.
Caveat: manufacturer color-range and CRI/TLCI figures are manufacturer claims, not independent proof that your footage will look right. Treat them as a starting point, then judge on your own preview.
Pass state: skin tones look the same in the morning and at night, and your face does not shift color when you move.
Check 5: Is your light big enough for your face?
The mechanism: the apparent size of the light relative to your face decides how soft the shadow edges look — not the wattage. A small panel close to you can look softer than a large panel across the room.
Diffusion, a softbox, or bouncing off a wall all increase apparent size. A bare point-source light at distance stays hard no matter how bright it is.
Pass state: shadow edges on your nose and jaw are gradual rather than a hard line.
Buying boundary: upgrade when you have already maximized placement and diffusion, and the shadows are still too hard for the look you want. That is the point where a bigger or softer source changes the result. Before that point, you are paying for a number.
If a check still fails: match the failure to the purchase
Once you have run the fixes and a check still fails, the failed check tells you what kind of purchase — if any — makes sense. Use this to avoid buying a light that solves a problem you do not have.

Then verify these constraints before choosing a model:
- Mounting and space. Does it clamp to your desk, need a stand, or need floor space you do not have?
- Power and cabling. Wall power, USB, or battery — and does the cable reach your shooting position?
- Control. On-unit dials, a remote, or app control. App control is convenient but adds a dependency.
- Noise and heat. Some fixtures use active cooling. That matters for long recordings and quiet rooms.
- Portability. If you travel or move rooms, weight, packed size, and battery options matter more than maximum output.
- Price. Use approximate street price ranges at time of research, and check the retailer for current price and availability.
Common mistakes this checklist catches
- Buying a second light before fixing background brightness or light direction.
- Chasing maximum brightness when the real problem is a small, hard source.
- Changing color temperature between recordings, then fighting white balance in the edit.
- Placing the light directly behind the camera and blaming the camera for flat footage.
- Assuming a famous brand or a high price guarantees a better result in a small room.
When to stop optimizing
Stop when all five checks pass on your camera preview and the result is repeatable session to session.
Repeatability beats perfection. A setup you can rebuild in two minutes is worth more than a marginally better look you cannot reproduce.
Revisit the checklist when your room, camera position, or content format changes — not on a schedule. If a check fails again, re-run the fix order before adding gear.
Run the five checks in order, fix placement and room conditions first, and only buy a light when a specific check still fails after those fixes. When that happens, the failed check — not the brightest spec sheet — should decide whether you need a diffused source, a repositionable mount, a tunable light, or nothing at all.
