You join the call, and your students squint. Your face is half in shadow, or washed out, or lit from below like you're telling ghost stories. Someone types "we can barely see you" in the chat, and you spend the rest of the class wondering if you look as bad as you feel.

Here's the good news: this is almost never a gear problem. It's a direction problem, a distance problem, and a consistency problem. Most teachers can fix the majority of bad call lighting by moving things they already own. The rest is a single purchase decision, and it's easier to make once you understand why the free fixes work.

This guide walks through the mistakes first, then the free fixes, then what actually matters if you decide to buy a light. Backlighting. A window, a bright wall, or a lamp behind your chair. The camera exposes for that bright background and your face goes dark. This is the number one problem.

One hard light too close to your face. A bare bulb or an undiffused lamp a foot from your cheek creates a hot spot on your skin and a hard shadow line down your nose or cheek. It looks harsh because it is harsh.

Light placed too low. Desk lamps and monitor glow both light you from underneath. It's unflattering on almost everyone, and it gets worse the closer the light is to your keyboard.

Glare and reflections. Glossy screens, eyeglasses, whiteboards, and shiny wall art all bounce light back at the camera. You end up with a bright rectangle on your glasses or a hotspot on your forehead that no amount of repositioning your chair fixes.

Fix the Free Things First

Most beginner lighting problems are solved with things already in your room. Work through these before opening a shopping tab.

Turn toward the window. Put the window in front of you or to your side, never behind you. If the light is harsh or changes through the day, close the blinds partway. You want the window as a soft, broad source, not a laser.

Raise your existing lamp. Get it to roughly eye level or slightly above. Then move it off to one side — about 45 degrees from your face — so shadows fall to one side instead of straight down. A lamp on a stack of books is a legitimate lighting rig.

Diffuse the hard source. A hard light becomes a soft light when you put something translucent between it and you. A sheet of diffusion material or a white shower-curtain-style panel can work. Bouncing is often easier and safer: aim the lamp at a white wall or a piece of foam board and let the wall light you. Don't improvise diffusion on a hot fixture unless you know the material can take the heat.

Match your color temperature. Pick one room light and turn the others off. If your lights are adjustable, set them all to the same warm or cool value. Mixed sources are why one side of your face looks orange and the other looks blue.

Test with the tool you actually teach in. Join a test meeting or record a short clip. Look at your own thumbnail, not the preview window — the preview often lies about exposure. If your face is visible and evenly lit in the recording, you're done. You don't need to buy anything.

What Actually Matters When You Buy a Light

If free adjustments can't hold up — maybe your room has no usable window, or your schedule puts you on camera at 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. — then a dedicated light makes sense. Here's what to weigh, in order.

Form factor and light size. A larger, diffused emitting surface is generally more forgiving on skin than a small point source. It spreads light over a wider area, which means softer shadows and less need for precise aiming. The tradeoff is desk or stand space.

Adjustable brightness and color temperature. You want to dim the light and shift it between warm and cool. Dimming lets you avoid running at full power in a small room. Color adjustment lets you match whatever room lighting you can't turn off.

Mounting and footprint. A desk clamp, a freestanding base, or a stand changes how much room you lose and how fast you can set up and tear down. For a shared classroom or a kitchen table, this matters more than brightness.

Noise and heat. Lights with active cooling — a fan inside the housing — can introduce fan noise into your microphone. For teaching and streaming, that's a real problem. For occasional calls, it's tolerable.

Short spec comparisons miss the friction that decides whether a setup survives daily use.

If you wear glasses or use a glossy screen, prioritize positioning flexibility and diffusion over raw brightness. A dimmer light you can angle correctly beats a brighter one you can't.

A Setup You Can Repeat Every Day

The goal is a setup that looks the same every time you sit down, without thinking about it.

  1. Place your main light slightly above eye level and about 45 degrees to one side. Check for a shadow under your nose and a hot spot on your forehead. If you see either, raise the light or move it further off-axis.
  2. Add a bounce or a second dim light on the shadow side only if the contrast looks harsh in your test recording. Most teachers don't need this.
  3. Set color temperature to match the room, then adjust brightness and camera exposure together. If the background looks blown out, first remove or reposition the bright background source — a window or a white wall — before you dim the light on your face. Dimming the key light to fix a bright background just makes your face darker.
