Nothing about the microphone changed. What changed is where it sits, how stable it stays, and how much of your session you spend fixing those two things.

That is the honest framing for this entire category. Most microphone accessories for creators do not touch the microphone's sound. They change positioning, stability, and repeatability. Once you accept that, the buying decision gets much simpler: buy the accessory that removes a problem you actually have, and skip the ones that only appear in setup photos.

Boom Arms and Desk Stands: Positioning and Repeatability

Check weight capacity first. Elgato's official documentation for the Wave Mic Arm MK.2 lists a capacity of 200–1,200 g (0.4–2.6 lb), and the Wave Mic Arm LP lists a maximum load of 2 kg (4.4 lb). Your microphone, plus shock mount, plus any adapter has to fit inside that range with headroom to spare. A heavy dynamic microphone with a suspension mount can push a lightweight arm past its limit, and an overloaded arm sags or refuses to hold position.

Then check reach and clearance. The MK.2 is documented at 950 mm horizontal and 850 mm vertical reach with 360-degree arm rotation. The LP is documented at 740 mm horizontal and 550 mm vertical reach, with 70 mm of lower-arm and 160 mm of upper-arm desk clearance. Longer reach suits wide desks and off-axis placement. A low-profile arm keeps your sightline to the monitor clear, which matters if you read scripts or teach on camera.

Measure your desk edge before you assume a clamp will fit. The LP's padded clamp is documented as expandable up to 60 mm (2.4 in). Thick edges, beveled edges, glass tops, and desks with cable trays can all block a clamp. Some setups need a desk plate instead.

Choosing Between a Long-Reach Arm and a Low-Profile Arm

The two documented Elgato arms illustrate a real design tradeoff, not just a spec difference.

Choose the longer-reach design (MK.2) when your desk is wide, your microphone needs to sit off to the side of your keyboard, or you want to position the mic without leaning across your workspace. The extra horizontal and vertical reach is the reason to pay for it.

Choose the low-profile design (LP) when your monitor sightline matters more than maximum reach — for example, if you read scripts on screen while recording or teach on camera. It sits below the shoulder line, and its shorter reach is sufficient for a standard desk layout.

Skip both when a fixed desk stand already holds your mic in the right spot. If your mic does not drift and your desk is not crowded, an arm adds hardware without removing a problem.

The workflow consequence is the part that shows up every day. An arm you can push aside and return to the same position removes setup friction. A stand you re-aim each session adds it back. If you record regularly in one spot and your desk is crowded, the arm earns its place. If your microphone is light, your desk is small, and you record occasionally in a fixed position, a simple desk stand gets the mic off the desk for less money and less hardware.

Be careful about what the specifications do and do not tell you. Official sources establish fit and adjustability. They do not establish durability, movement noise, or whether a clamp slips after a year of daily use. Treat those as open questions rather than settled advantages.

Pop Filters and Shock Mounts: Small Parts, Specific Jobs

These two get bundled together in marketing, but they solve different problems, and the available evidence for both is thinner than for mounting hardware.

A pop filter places a mesh or foam barrier between your mouth and the capsule. It breaks up the burst of air behind plosive consonants — the p, b, and t sounds that produce a low-frequency thump on playback. It does not change your tone, add clarity, or reduce room noise. It earns its place if you speak close to the microphone and hear plosives when you listen back. If you record at a hand's width or more from the capsule, it often does nothing you can hear.

A shock mount suspends the microphone body in an elastic or otherwise decoupled cradle. It stops desk taps, keyboard vibration, and cable tugging from reaching the capsule as low-frequency rumble. It earns its place if you type, write, or bump the desk while recording. If your microphone already sits on a suspended mount, adding another is usually redundant.

The compatibility trap catches people here. Shock mounts are microphone-body specific. A mount sized for one microphone may not grip another, and the ball head or adapter on your arm can change what will thread on. Verify the thread size and the body diameter, not just the brand name on the box.

The question is not which tier is best. It is whether the extra reach and adjustability removes a problem you actually have.

Who Should Buy What, and Who Should Skip

Buy an arm first if you record regularly in one spot, your desk is crowded, and your mic drifts out of position between sessions.

Buy a stand first if your microphone is light, you record occasionally, and you want the lowest-cost way to get the mic off the desk.

Buy a pop filter if you hear plosives on playback and you speak close to the capsule.

Buy a shock mount if keyboard or desk vibration shows up as rumble in your recordings.

Skip all of it if your recordings already sound clean and your only complaint is that the setup looks unglamorous. Accessories are not a substitute for microphone technique or room treatment, and no mount fixes a room that echoes.

The recommendation flips in three situations. If you start recording in multiple locations, favor portability over reach. If you upgrade to a heavier microphone, recheck load capacity before assuming your current arm still works. If you move to a thicker or glass desk, recheck clamp fit — those two numbers, weight capacity and clamp range, decide whether the accessory works at all.

Fix the recurring problem, not the spec sheet. If your mic moves, buy mounting. If your recordings pop, buy a pop filter. If your desk rumbles, buy isolation.
